Christmas Day on Avenue Q
Growing up Jewish, I don’t miss the Christmas-morning-presents-under-the–tree-memory. I don’t miss it because I never had it. On Christmas day, my family and I would go to a big, popular movie in the afternoon and eat Chinese food after that. Tradition.
As an adult, I celebrated special Christmases with friends under their Christmas trees, with some very special Midnight Masses at their churches.
One very memorable Christmas was in 2003. I was on a vacation trip to New York City with my dear friend and co-author of our book, “Bless Your Stress: It Means You’re Still Alive!”
There were very few Broadway shows scheduled to perform a matinee on Christmas day. All I knew about the show, “Avenue Q,” was it had gotten some good buzz. When the curtain went up, we rolled our eyes: the puppets and human actors looked like Sesame Street goes Broadway. But when the cast launched into the song, “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?” we knew we were in the right place.
I said, “I smell Tony,” and sure enough, it won the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Book, and Score for that year.
The big theme of the show rang the chimes of my life mission. The song is called, “Purpose,” and it goes:
“It’s that little flame
That lights a fire
Under your ass.
Gotta find out,
Don’t wanna wait!
Got to make sure that my
Life will be great!
Gotta find my purpose
Before it’s too late.”
The show was great, and after, we went for Chinese food…delicious.
