Curiosity: Your Superpower
Most people comment on my “energy” or “youthful energy.” When I was 16, after starring in a musical at Peoria Corn Stock summer stock, the newspaper reviewer commented on my tremendous energy. I received similar feedback all the way through my 30-year keynote speaking career.
What is it? I believe energy is produced by curiosity. Albert Einstein wrote in a letter:
“People like you and I, though mortal of course like everyone else, do not grow old no matter how long we live. What I mean is we never cease to stand like curious children before the great Mystery into which we were born.” – Albert Einstein in a letter to Otto Julius Birger, September 29, 1942.
Curiosity is the strong desire to know or learn something. I learn every day from my brilliant clients, wonderful family and friends, and anyone who comes into my life anytime. I have my childhood curiosity, and I’m always in touch with the curious little Mimi inside.
I don’t mean the inner child that integrative psychology helps heal. I mean the joyous little spirit that is Mimi. Just to make sure, in the view from my bed sits the little chair I sat in as a toddler. On the chair sits my Raggedy Ann doll, still intact for over 70 years. Mom said I called her “my Annie” even though I don’t remember. For many years, my grandma lovingly washed and dried and ironed her clothes. I received that much love and more from everyone in my young life. Every time I see “my Annie,” I feel joy. That’s gotta be the little girl inside, right?
So, no matter how long we live, we don’t need to grow old. What keeps you from growing old is the curiosity to find your voice and claim your power with your words. Let’s do that together.
