Every Birthday Leads to This One

When the Sun makes its way into the constellation of Aquarius next week, my birthday season begins. It’s when I take stock of my life—where I stand. And I look at who I have become in the year since my last birthday. Here’s my recent “a-ha”: The more birthdays I have, the more I am sure that every moment in my life has led me to this moment right now.

What I’ve noticed is not everyone thinks so. When I coach, I ask clients to put into words their dues-paying activity. This is key to marketing their product or service, and key to their legacy speech—their TEDx Talk.

All too often, I hear, “Well, I USED to be in real estate, (or finance, or fill in the blank), but now I’m a coach, so I don’t want to talk about THAT part of my life—that’s in the past.”

I say, “Well, that part of your life led up to this part. Your listener wants to know why you were credible in the past, and why should they give you their money now.”

Sometimes, the reaction is shock. But then, we dig for transferable skills. Here’s a hypothetical: “Yes, you may have been in real estate, and now you are a coach. But did you not coach people on the biggest investment of their lives? Did you not hand hold, follow up, keep them accountable? Did you not draw out their thoughts and feelings, with your masterful questions?”

Of course they did, and that’s why every experience in your life is relevant to this moment now. And all of your experiences led to forming your values. These are your principles, your standards of behavior. You won’t operate without them. They are your “must haves.”

Here are mine: #1 Honesty: a safe space to express truth, openly and honestly (and never exaggerate anything about your life to your listeners). #2 Truth: you know what it is—look to your inner knowledge. #3 Fun: I encourage humor to find the funny. #4 Spirit: I will assist you to fulfill your highest potential.
