Might As Well Jump (Revisited)
“Mimi, how do you stay so upbeat throughout this crazy/nightmare time?” I was asked this during the pandemic, and now I’m asked again. I did not have an eloquent answer till I heard the lyrics, loud and clear, though my headphones, of Van Halen’s “Jump.” I realized I do get up, roll with the punches, and I go ahead and jump. I create my own little jump on the stationary bike. Might as well. For me, jumping is spinning—fashioning my very own spin class–standing out of the saddle, volume turned all the way up on my headphones, dancing on the pedals, heart rate up, sweat flying. With younger bone joints, I have been known to pound the pavement, run up and down stairs, or sweat in a live Zumba class. And now: Respect the number.
We don’t need to sweat to create small joys. We can jump for joy in our hearts.
And we can be our own cheerleader. These are dark days. Time to connect with the people who motivate us. We need them now more than ever. You have a network of colleagues and friends and coworkers who cheer for you. They connect with you on a “I want you to make it – I’m here for you” level. They are the people you root for, too! These people can be mentors who relate to you on a “been there, done that” basis.
So, until we can jump together in a stationary hug, I will leave you with my favorite lyrics for the dark times.
“I get up and nothin’ gets me down . . .
You got to roll with the punches and get to what’s real. . .
Ah, might as well jump . . . go ahead and jump . . .
You say you don’t know
You won’t know until you begin. So jump.”
