Past Is Prelude: What Did You Do Before This?

Tomorrow the Sun makes its way into the constellation of Aquarius and, my birthday season begins. I take stock of my life and who I have become in the year since my last birthday. Here’s my recent “a-ha”: I am sure that every moment in my life has led me to this moment right now.

I’ve noticed not everyone agrees. When I coach, I ask clients to put it into words: What’s your background? What’s your dues-paying activity? This is key to marketing their product or service, and key to their legacy speech—their TEDx Talk.

All too often, I hear, “Well, I USED to be in real estate, (or finance, or fill in the blank), but now I’m a coach, so I don’t want to talk about THAT part of my life—that’s in the past.”

I say, “Well, that part of your life led up to this part. Your listener wants to know how your background and experience make you credible and why they should give you their money now.”

We discover transferable skills. Here’s a hypothetical: “Yes, you may have been in real estate, and now you are a coach. But did you not coach people on the biggest investment of their lives? Did you not hand hold, follow up, keep them accountable? Did you not draw out their thoughts and feelings, with your masterful questions?”

Of course they did, and that’s why every experience in your life is relevant to this moment now. And all of your experiences lead to your skills. I’ve transferred my skills of speaking into coaching people who speak! I guide you to choose your words to delight the listener. Where have you paid your dues? How can your experience benefit others? Do you focus people? Can you keep them accountable?
