Respect the Number

Birthday time. “Age is just a number?” Sure it is. No “just” about it. As the number increases, so does your wisdom and your value. So respect the number. “Respect the number” has become a mantra for me and everyone who knows me. Be kind to yourself. Be aware your human body is a wonderful machine, and the parts wear out.

Here’s how it’s real for me:
1. Walking: leave earlier; take your time. It’s not a race.
2. Walking down the stairs: use the railing. It’s there.
3. At a crosswalk: wait for the WALK sign.
4. Driving: slow down; use the right lane more. It’s not a race.
5. Driving at night: if it’s getting challenging, use a Lyft sometimes.
6. Hard workout: give yourself more recovery time.
7. Eating: give yourself more time to digest.
8. Indulging in adult beverages: RESPECT the NUMBER!
9. Remembering things: make lists; check them. You don’t need to remember everything.

I’m very grateful, because I realize a big number beats the alternative. Nineteen years ago, friends asked if I was afraid I would die. I said no, because I wasn’t. I was battling the BIG “C” for four years of different protocols, and lived to hardly ever tell the tale. I’d much rather make people giggle. My default setting is “joy.” So, RESPECT the NUMBER!

And respect how you represent yourself in the world. Speak respectfully about the positive difference you make. Let’s get started.
