The Face of Innocence
Me–at 21. College graduation photo. An unlined face, yet to experience the challenges– jobs, career, relationships, health. Most people faced much bigger challenges, and I was grateful. I was a college “activist,” and I thought we had solved the inequities of race and gender.
Now, just in time, comes Ken Burns’ latest masterpiece documentary on Leonardo da Vinci on PBS. Leonardo said about his life, and “the gift given to me by the universe is the chance to question it.”
So I question life right now. As I have done many times since I was 21, I turn to the brilliance of James Baldwin’s writings:
“Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
“It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.”
“Perhaps the turning point in one’s life is realizing that to be treated like a victim is not necessarily to become one.”
So I operate not as a victim, but with the joy of curiosity. I draw out the true voice and message of myself and everyone –friend and client.
